Welcome to FluteFiles by Clare Southworth, Professor of Flute at the Royal Academy of Music, London.
The objective of FluteFiles is to provide a series of audio and visual Podcasts to assist flute players in their ongoing development as musicians. The opening Podcasts in the FluteFiles series deal with some of the fundamentals of flute playing and will be of particular interest to the new player.
If you have an area of flute playing that you would like addressed, for example ”the best way to practice scales” or “how do you interpret a certain phrase or piece” through to one of the many “orchestral studies”, then please let us know either through this site or through visiting www.claresouthworth.com and we will put all the suggestions directly to Clare.

Dear Clare
I am not sure if this is the best way to contact you however I have really enjoyed your Flutefiles. Is it possible that you could record in the future some ‘guidance’ videos specifically about some of the flute repertoire. For example I have heard the opening bars of the Mozart in G and D played in many different ways. Also the opening bars (also ending) of Syrinx. I am a mature flute player (41 years of age) returning after 18 years away from the instrument. I did pass my AB grade 8 when I was sixteen and would find any instructional video looking at parts of music extremely useful.
Thank you for you time and consideration.
Sincerely
James Mauduit
